The Evolution of Household Foodscapes in Latvia

The amount of science generated evidence describing food systems has been growing in last decades… and so has the diversity of explanations applied to describe the processes in these systems. Among these interpretations commonly there are explanations based on simple. The article traces changes in household food consumption patterns comparing the late Soviet period and the present day based on household interviews and interpretive analysis.

Article concludes that there is multiple change trajectors of micro transition from one food consumption to another. Still there are similarties how various groups have changed the foodshed of Soviet period to foodshed of democratic republic which allows suggesting that there are wider structural aspects that influence all involved actors equaly. For example - amount of food available have increased and modern shopping malls have changes the shopping practices. Meanwhile practices like gardening, which are deaply rooted in the culture, in many cases have remained untouched. Household practices echo macro societal changes while simultaneously illustrating how individual habits fill gaps of models imposed by structure.
